A drinking game where nobody has to drink
Every group has that one friend who gets a little too into game night. Drunkle Pat is that friend, in your pocket, and he is the only one who pays for it in the morning.
The idea is simple. You build a buddy, hand them a drink, and every sip pushes the night a little further off the rails. The joke starts subtle. It does not stay subtle. By the end of the night Pat is moonwalking across a pool hall with a tie around his head, and you are the one crying laughing.
It works as the centerpiece of a party, a pass around the table game, or a way to make a friend spit out their soda. Nobody at the table has to drink a thing to play.
How to play Drunkle Pat
- Build your buddy. Pick a guy or a gal, then the skin, hair and eye colors, one of 15 tops from a tux to a Hawaiian shirt, 8 bottoms and 13 hats in 10 colors. Name them, choose their drink, from beer and wine to a martini, whiskey, seltzer, shots or a wine cooler, and set a tolerance from Lightweight to Absolute Pro.
- Pick a venue. Dive bar, night club, rave, tiki bar, pool hall, frat house, or a room at home. There are 15 in all.
- Sip. Tilt the phone like you are raising a glass, or hold to guzzle. On Apple Watch, raise your wrist.
- Watch the night unravel. Pat moves through eight stages, from sober in a pressed suit to warm, tipsy and well past it, with the glass draining and spilling along the way.
- Survive the hangover. Every great night ends in hangover mode.
Party mode turns it into game night
Party mode is where Drunkle Pat goes from funny to chaotic. Friends with the app nearby show up on one shared dance floor, each with their own Pat, and everyone can send preset lines, emoji and cheers without typing a word.
It all runs phone to phone. There is no server, no account and no sign up, so a room full of people can join in seconds. A "Who's here" list lets you hide or report anyone you do not want on your floor.
Built around the Apple Watch
Drunkle Pat was designed with the Apple Watch in mind, so your phone can stay in your pocket. The watch app reads the natural motion of raising your wrist to take a sip and counts it, then keeps the phone and watch in sync, with little dots showing which stage Pat has reached. It is the rare watch game you play without looking at the watch.
The tech behind the laughs
Pat is not a sprite sheet bought from an asset store. He is custom vector art on a jointed rig, drawn and animated live inside the app, which is how he can pull 58 different moves, from break dancing and headstands to the moonwalk, and blend them together smoothly.
There is no scripted loop, either. Every sip pulls a fresh stunt and a fresh line, picked for Pat's stage, venue and outfit, so two nights never play out the same way. The soundtrack is 18 original songs across house, rock, country, yacht rock, Latin and disco, and it gets woozier as Pat does. You can also play songs from your own music library.
Under the hood it is native Swift for iPhone and watchOS. Party mode uses Apple's Multipeer Connectivity, which links nearby phones directly over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with no server in the middle. There are no accounts, no tracking and no analytics, and purchases are handled by Apple.
Played for laughs, on purpose
Drunkle Pat is comedy. It does not measure, track or encourage drinking, and you never need a real drink to play. Sobering up in the game is slow on purpose, so it never rewards drinking faster.
