Why subscriptions got out of hand

Subscriptions make sense for apps that cost real money to run every month, like streaming or cloud storage. The trouble is everything else followed. Note apps, calculators, flashlights and photo filters all want a monthly fee now, and those small charges add up fast.

A $9.99 app you buy once is cheaper than a $4.99 subscription by month three, and every month after that is free. That is the whole argument.

Every app on this list works without an ongoing subscription: you buy it once, unlock it once, pay only when you use it, or use it free. We checked prices on the US App Store and the developers' own sites in late September 2026. Prices can change, so check the store before you buy.

The drawing app countless illustrators rely on is still a single App Store purchase. Procreate says it plainly: no subscriptions. $12.99 gets you the full brush engine, layers, 3D painting and animation tools on iPad, for keeps. There is nothing to cancel, ever.

Buy once: Things 3

Things 3 is the to do app people recommend when they are tired of recommending to do apps. Cultured Code sells it as a one time purchase for each platform, with no subscriptions. The Apple Watch app comes free with the iPhone version, and installing it on more than one device of the same kind costs nothing extra.

Buy once: Fortissimo

Fortissimo is an offline album player for people who still listen to whole records. Rate each song and it scores the album, keeps your notes, and builds playlists from your ratings. $9.99 once, with no ads and no streaming account. It also made our best new apps for October 2026.

Free with a one time unlock: Drunkle Pat (ours)

Free with a one time unlock: Hibi and TeFont

Hibi is a calendar and journal that shows each day as a page of paper you can doodle on and sticker up. It works with Apple's own Calendar and Reminders, needs no account, and the core app is free. Hibi Plus adds widgets and extras for $6.99, once.

TeFont turns your handwriting into a real OpenType font, drawn right on your iPhone or iPad. Everything unlocks for $1.99.

Pay per use: SatisFaxion (ours)

Some jobs only come up a few times a year, and faxing is the classic. SatisFaxion charges one credit per fax of up to five pages, from $4.99 for five credits down to about $0.75 a fax. Three Good Things is a tiny gratitude journal: write down three things that went well today. It is free, with no long prompts and no pressure.

The PITCH Roofing app, which Slover Digital built for PITCH Roofing, is free for Florida homeowners, with a satellite roofing calculator and 3D roof designer that need no account.

How to find and cancel subscriptions you forgot

Before you buy anything new, see what you are already paying for.

• iPhone and iPad: open Settings, tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. Tap any subscription to cancel it.
• Android: open the Google Play Store, tap your profile picture, then Payments and subscriptions, then Subscriptions.

Cancelling keeps the app working until the end of the period you already paid for. Deleting an app does not cancel its subscription, so always cancel in settings first.

How to spot a subscription trap

• A paywall on first launch before you have seen the app do anything.
• Weekly pricing, which makes a big yearly number look small.
• A free trial that renews automatically at the full yearly price.
• Scare tactics, like a phone cleaner claiming your storage is 99 percent critical.
• No lifetime or one time option for an app that costs nothing to run on a server.

Good apps tell you what you are paying for, and let you pay for it once when they can.
