How we picked

Every app here launched, relaunched or arrived on a new platform since summer 2026. We checked each store listing, price and platform in late September 2026, and leaned on reporting from TechCrunch, MacRumors, TapSmart and Android Authority for the apps we did not build. Nothing here paid to be included.

Full disclosure: four of the ten are ours. Whittle, SatisFaxion and Drunkle Pat are Slover Digital apps, and Slover Digital built the PITCH Roofing app for a client. They are labeled below, and they sit at the end of the list so the outside picks get the spotlight first.

1. Outernet: your saved posts, finally turned into plans

Everyone has a camera roll of restaurant reels and pop up events they swore they would go to. Outernet pulls those saves from TikTok, Instagram, links and screenshots, works out the dates, times and places, and lays them out on a map and a timeline with reminders. Finish something and you get a stamp in a digital passport. It comes from Danielle Egan and Athena Leong, the duo behind San Francisco's Pursuit scavenger hunt, and TechCrunch calls it a motivation engine for real life.

Price: free with five imports a day, with an Explorer's Club subscription for more. Platforms: iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs, with an Android waitlist.

2. Sunbird: iMessage on Android, take two

Sunbird returned to Google Play on August 5, 2026, and it puts iMessage, RCS and SMS in one Android inbox, blue bubbles included. It needs your Apple ID, and you show up to iPhone contacts by email address rather than phone number. Go in with eyes open: the first version shut down in 2023 over serious security flaws. MacRumors reports the company now says messages are encrypted on the device and in transit, and are not stored on its servers.

Price: 14 day free trial, then $2.99 a month or $24.99 a year. Platform: Android.

3. Fortissimo: an album player with opinions

Streaming apps track what you play. Fortissimo, from developer Jason Ruby, tracks what you think. Rate each song from 0 to 10 and it scores the whole album for you, keeps notes on specific tracks, and builds smart playlists from your ratings. It plays your own downloaded music, with no algorithm, no feed, no ads and no streaming account.

Price: $9.99 once, no subscription. Platform: iPhone.

4. Journeybot: packing lists that check the forecast

Tell Journeybot where you are going, when, how you are getting there and what you have planned, and it builds a packing list around the weather at your destination. It adds baggage limit reminders, currency conversion, reusable templates and widgets, and it was the winner of TapSmart's September indie app showcase.

Price: free, with premium at $4.99 a month, $24.99 a year or a lifetime option. Platforms: iPhone, iPad and Mac.

5. Notability for Android: the iPad favorite crosses over

After 16 years as an Apple exclusive, Notability from Ginger Labs is on Android. The beta opened in April 2026 and it has now reached a stable release, according to Android Authority. Handwrite or type notes, then turn them into flashcards and quizzes. It shines on tablets with a stylus.

Price: free account to start, with paid plans for the full feature set. Platform: Android.

6. Pirates: a pirate cat guards your screen time

Pirates turns an app blocker into a game. Finish focus sessions to earn gold, then spend that gold to unlock the apps that eat your day. It is a smarter bribe than willpower, and it made TapSmart's September indie showcase.

Price: free trial, then about $20 a year. Platform: iPhone.

7. Whittle: an honest storage cleaner (ours)

Whittle frees up space on iPhone and Android without fake junk numbers, scareware or ads. It compresses videos and photos, finds real duplicates by content and color, and shows the true before and after, all on the phone. Deletes go to Recently Deleted, so everything can be undone. 8. SatisFaxion: pay per fax, no subscription (ours)

SatisFaxion sends a fax from your iPhone for one credit, up to five pages, with no plan and no account. Scan with the camera, sign, redact and preview it like a fax machine sees it. Credits never expire, a failed fax refunds itself, and the document is deleted once it lands. There are even seven little games to play while it sends. Read why pay per fax beats a fax subscription.

Price: $4.99 for 5 credits, down to about $0.75 a fax. Platform: iPhone, Android on the way.

9. PITCH Roofing: roofing tech in your pocket (built by us)

For Florida homeowners, the PITCH Roofing app measures your roof by satellite and shows ballpark prices by material, lets you design a roof in 3D, and for PITCH customers, tracks the whole project with documents, photos and messages. 10. Drunkle Pat: the one to watch (ours)

Drunkle Pat is a comedy drinking game where a cartoon buddy does all the drinking. Tilt the phone or raise your wrist to sip, and Pat works through eight stages and 58 dance moves across 15 venues, with a party mode for friends nearby. No real drink required.
