The iPhone Fold is finally here (Apple calls it iPhone Duo), plus the best Android foldables of 2026

After years of rumors, Apple finally folded. The first foldable iPhone ships October 23 under a name almost nobody guessed, and it walks into a fight Samsung, Google and Motorola have been having for years. Here is what Apple built, the Android foldables worth a look, and how to keep a $2,000 phone from running out of room.

The short answer

The foldable iPhone everyone called the iPhone Fold launched as iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026. It starts at $1,999 with 256GB, goes all the way to 2TB, opens to a 7.6 inch screen, and lands in stores October 23 after pre-orders open October 16. The best Android foldables right now are the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra ($2,099), the Galaxy Z Fold8 ($1,899), the Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold ($1,899), the Galaxy Z Flip8 ($1,199) and the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 ($1,500). None of them take a memory card, which makes Whittle, our storage cleaner for iPhone and Android, the easy way to keep one from filling up.

iPhone Duo: what Apple actually shipped

Everyone called it the iPhone Fold. Apple went with iPhone Duo, a nod to its two screens: a 5.4 inch display on the outside that works like a regular iPhone, and a 7.6 inch display inside that Apple says is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Opened up, it is the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever made. Apple's announcement has the full rundown, and here is what matters.

  • Price: from $1,999, or $83.29 a month for 24 months.
  • Storage: 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
  • Chip: A20 Pro, built on a 2 nanometer process.
  • Cameras: a 48MP Main camera with a 2x optical quality telephoto, a 48MP Ultra Wide, and 4K video at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision.
  • Unlocking: Touch ID in the side button, which works open or closed.
  • Battery: up to 24 hours of use with both screens used equally.
  • Build: a titanium frame, IP68 water resistance, and a hinge made of more than 100 parts.
  • Dates: pre-orders October 16 at 5 a.m. Pacific, in stores October 23 in more than 70 countries, with 28 more following October 30.

The software is the sleeper story. iOS 27.1 brings Split View to the iPhone for the first time, so you can run two apps side by side, open two windows of the same app and save your favorite app pairs. The Dock moves to the side, and StandBy works on either screen.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: the one to beat

Samsung's slimmest foldable is 4.1mm thick open and 8.9mm closed, weighs 215 grams, and opens to an 8 inch screen with a 6.5 inch cover screen. It has a 200MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide, a 10MP 3x telephoto and a 5,000mAh battery, and it can record 8K video. It starts at $2,099. Samsung's spec sheet

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8: the new shape

The regular Fold8 goes wider and shorter, with a 7.6 inch screen inside, a 5.5 inch cover screen and two 50MP cameras. At 201 grams it is lighter than both the Ultra and the Pixel, and at $1,899 it costs less than last year's Fold7. Yahoo Tech's Unpacked recap

Google Pixel 11 Pro Fold: the clean Android pick

Google's foldable has an 8 inch screen inside, a 6.5 inch cover screen, Tensor G6, 16GB of memory on every model and an IP68 rating, a step up from Samsung's IP48. It gets seven years of Android and security updates. The catch, per Droid Life's review, is that it feels heavy at 239 grams and its square inner screen formats some apps oddly. It starts at $1,899 for 256GB, $2,019 for 512GB and $2,249 for 1TB.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip8: the pocket pick

The Flip8 opens to a 6.9 inch screen and folds down to a square with a 4.1 inch cover screen. It is 6.1mm thin open, Samsung's lightest Flip yet at 180 grams, and it runs on an Exynos 2600 with a 4,300mAh battery. It starts at $1,199.

Motorola Razr Ultra 2026: the flip with flair

Motorola's top Razr went on sale May 21 at $1,500. It opens to a 7 inch screen and comes with 512GB, a 5,000mAh battery, a 50MP main camera and a 4 inch outside screen under Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. On a tighter budget, the Razr+ is $1,099 and the base Razr is $800, though the base model now comes only with 128GB. 9to5Google has the details

Why foldable phones run out of storage faster

A foldable is a phone and a small tablet in one, and it fills up like both. Here is why the storage meter climbs faster than you expect.

  • A bigger screen changes your habits. You watch more, download more and shoot more video when the screen is the size of a paperback. The iPhone Duo records 4K at 120 frames per second, and the Fold8 Ultra records 8K. A single minute of 4K video can take hundreds of megabytes.
  • Two apps at once means twice the clutter. Split View on the iPhone Duo and multi-window on Android keep more apps busy, and every one of them saves downloads, offline files and cache.
  • There is no memory card. None of the foldables in this story has a microSD slot. The storage you buy on day one is the storage you live with.
  • More storage costs real money. On the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, going from 256GB to 1TB adds $350. Clearing out what you already have is a lot cheaper.

Why Whittle is the go-to cleaner for foldable phones

Full disclosure: Whittle is a Slover Digital app. It runs on every phone in this story: any iPhone on iOS 18.6 or later, which includes the iPhone Duo with iOS 27.1, and Android 11 or later, which covers every current Galaxy, Pixel and Razr foldable. Here is what it does for a phone that shoots a lot of video and never gets a memory card.

  • Shrinks big videos for real. Compress in three steps, Sand, Shave or Whittle, and Whittle keeps the new copy only if it is truly smaller. You can also switch older clips to HEVC for the same look in less space.
  • Finds true duplicates. It matches photos by their content and color, not just the file name, and keeps the highest resolution copy.
  • Rounds up screen recordings. A dedicated tool gathers your screen recordings so you can compress or clear them in one place.
  • Protects what you love. Favorites and any album or folder you choose stay out of every scan, and on iPhone your Hidden album is never touched.
  • Shows your space at a glance. A home screen widget shows free space, what Whittle can reclaim and how much you have cleaned.
  • Lets you change your mind. On iPhone, deletes go to Recently Deleted. On Android, you choose Trash or permanent, so nothing is gone for good unless you say so.
  • Keeps it private. Everything runs on the phone. No ads, no fake junk numbers and nothing uploaded.

Price: every tool is free for up to 10 items a day, and the count refills daily. Whittle Pro removes the limit for $3.99 a month, $19.99 a year or $39.99 once. Get it on the App Store or Google Play, and read how to free up space on your phone without the scareware for the full playbook.
